Mechanical Lead
UTAT’s Space Systems Division is recruiting a new Mechanical Lead . The Mechanical team is responsible for designing the overall “skeleton” of the satellite, which includes developing mass and volume budgets, creating CAD models, drawings, and prototypes of our components and assemblies, working with Thermal , ADCS , RF & Ground Station, Electrical, Power and Payload teams to determine our mechanical interfaces, and performing analyses and tests to verify that the satellite will survive the high g-forces and intense vibrations that come with launch.
Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and mentor a team of aspiring engineers, providing guidance to foster a culture of excellence and continuous improvement
- Lead mechanical design activities for the GOOSE (?) - CUBICS 2026 mission, and documentation/end of design activities for the FINCH mission
- Develop and implement onboarding for new Mechanical members
- Run weekly Mechanical meetings and work sessions
- Manage goals and timelines for Mechanical work within the team’s design cycle
- Develop and manage CAD models (in SOLIDWORKS), mechanical drawings, prototypes of the Mechanical parts and assemblies, Finite Element Analysis (in Ansys) simulations and Thermal design work
- Maintain organization of CAD files on Sibe and documentation of work on Notion
- Regularly attend Systems meetings and meet with other subsystems to provide a Mechanical input into design tasks and challenges, and handle interfaces with other teams
- Present team progress at design reviews
SHALL Requirements
- Have contributed to UTAT Space Systems for a minimum of one semester
- Have contributed to Mechanical related work on a design team
- Have experience using CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks, Fusion 360, OnShape etc.)
- Be a team player and strong communicator
- Be familiar with mechanical design and manufacturing fundamentals
- Be able to contribute to 10-15 hours per week to the role
- Be able to attend the Leads, Systems, and Mechanical meetings on a weekly basis
