Mechanical Lead

UTAT’s Space Systems Division is recruiting a new Structures Lead ****for the FINCH CubeSat Mission. FINCH is a remote-sensing nanosatellite carrying a hyperspectral imaging camera for crop residue mapping. We are currently in our detailed design phase (set to finish in summer 2024) and about to begin building our prototype, making this an exciting time to join the Structures team.

The Structures team is responsible for designing the overall “skeleton” of the satellite, which includes creating CAD models and drawings of our components and assemblies, working with the Thermal, Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS), Payload, and Electrical teams to determine our mechanical interfaces, and performing analyses to verify that the satellite will survive the high g-forces and intense vibrations that come with launch.

Responsibilities

• Lead, manage, and mentor a team of aspiring engineers, providing guidance and fosters the culture of excellence and continuous improvement
• Lead the mechanical design of FINCH and prototyping activities
• Present team progress at design reviews
• Onboard new members onto the team
• Create CAD models and mechanical drawings of our parts and assemblies using SolidWorks
• Perform structural calculations and finite element analysis (FEA) simulations using NX
• Plan and coordinate vibration testing activities

Requirements

• A minimum of 1 year of mechanical-related work on a design team
• Experience using solid modelling software (e.g., SolidWorks, OnShape, Solid Edge, Inventor, Fusion 360, etc.)
• Familiarity with mechanical drawings and manufacturing fundamentals
• Must be available to work in person if required
