Welcome to Optics! We oversee all things light and are responsible for designing, building, and testing our hyperspectral imaging payload: the FINCH Eye. What follows are the steps to get you onboarded to the team:

  1. Logistical Onboarding
  2. Review the Basics

Logistical Onboarding

  1. Join the following Slack channels: #optics, #systems, #general, #random, #tools, #it, and any others that interest you. A couple of guidelines:
    1. Aim to have all technical conversations in public channels - as opposed to private DMs - to prioritize transparency and fruitful team discussion.
    2. Slack history is only searchable for 90 days, so any information you would like to save for the long-run should be stored in Notion.
  2. Get familiar with Notion - especially its cmd/ctrl+P search feature (lifesaver) - and within it, the Optics homepage.

(Optics Lead: please add new members to Notion by sharing the Optics page with the new members google accounts and assigning them edit permissions.)

Review the Basics

Optics Onboarding is a “prerequisite” for further involvement with UTAT SS Optics. Once you have completed logistical onboarding, please carefully read through and understand the Optics in a (Fairly Large) Nutshell article.

Many joining UTAT SS Optics do not have strong academic knowledge of optics as a subject. This is because most high schools do not cover optics extensively in their physics curriculum, and there are only a handful of optics courses at our university. Besides, we are all students and came here to learn. If you feel that you may be in this category, don’t be discouraged - we will still value your contribution to the team. However, it will be greatly beneficial for you to be aware of the basics.

If you need to review / learn optics, you could either:

In the first few weeks after onboarding, we will be going over the Giancoli textbook during Optics subsystem meetings to ensure everyone is on the same page regarding the basic physics. See the below schedule (Fall 2024):
