• Consisted of: 1) final charge-up, 2) flight software upload, and 3) packaging

  • The team performed the final charge-up and flight software upload in our lab in Toronto since we would be given limited time (4 hours) to complete the deployer integration at Firefly’s facilities in Bellevue

  • Fresh foam was used for packing HERON in the Pelican case
  • A new piece of Kapton tape was used to hold down the functioning deployment switch
  • “Transportation of Dangerous Goods” labels (for Li-ion batteries and the bio) were added to the Pelican case in addition to the cardboard box for redundancy
  • HERON’s batteries were charged to 3.403 V. This was deemed sufficient since launch was only ~2 months away, so the battery voltage was not expected to decrease much in that time span. Any substantial increases in battery voltage would’ve required multiple days of charging. A detailed battery charging log can be found here.
  • In case someone wanted to open up the cardboard box to see what was inside, we placed the following docs on top of the bubble-wrapped Pelican case that provide information on HERON:

• HERON Packaging consisted of 4 layers: 1) Pelican case, 2) bubble wrap, 3) packing peanuts, and 4) cardboard box

  • HERON was packaged with all these layers for added protection during shipping. The cardboard box also provided more surface area for the shipping label and other markings.
