Short circuit paths are very dangerous because they sink a ton of current which damages the component that has the short circuit and disrupts the functioning of the rest of the power distribution. We need to analyze the potential risks to short circuit faults our satellite faces. What are the mechanisms for shorts unexpectedly happening when we're in space? How likely are they? Consider also cascaded faults. If something shorts on one rail, what's the worst case? Some bucks have OCP/SCP that could be used to mitigate that effect. Could one rail faulting affect other rails? Our end goal with this is to figure out whether or not every single peripheral device (see block diagram) needs a fuse. This would be super clunky and we’d rather not do it, which is why we need you to look into whether or not we can get away without it.
When you’re done, you can formalize this into a Trade about including vs not including subsystem level fuses. You can find the structure of a Trade here: (don’t put it in the actual trades database yourself, I’ll do that when you’re done. For now, keep everything under the Notes section of this page)
Also, what about faults inside of EPS?
